Installing Wooden Blinds
Wooden blinds can be used in nearly every window opening. The window must be measured properly to assure a good fit and the wooden blinds must be manufactured to fit those measurements. Before measuring, one should consider how they want their wooden blinds to hang, as this will affect the method of measurement. When dealing with windows that are flat against the rest of the wall, this may not be an issue. However, some windows are recessed into the wall, opening up more options for hanging your blinds.
Wooden blinds that are hung within the window frame should not be wider than the frame itself. They should be cut slightly smaller than the window opening, so as not to scrape the insides of the recessed window frame. These wooden blinds will typically be mounted within the window frame as well, attached at the top and upper corners for stability. If you choose this type of wooden blinds, you should be sure not to order them too long either as they will not provide a smooth surface when closed. They may appear bunched up or, conversely, may spill over the bottom of the window.
This looks sloppy and detracts from the natural beauty of wooden blinds. However, another option would be to hang the blinds on the outside of the frame, making the wooden blinds flush with the rest of the wall. In this case, the wooden blinds would be mounted on the outside of the window frame. Wooden blinds hung this way should be slightly wider and longer than the frame itself to prevent gaps which would allow drafts into the room or allow the blinds to shift. A solid, smooth look is the ultimate goal when installing wooden blinds.
